COLONIAL MENTALITY

In this blog we can comprehend one of the many mentalities that Filipinos are now accommodating. Due to the colonization of the people from the West, there are changes we are now adapting. These changes are mostly adapted by the young people of today. However there are ways that we can slightly alter some of these changes.

Do I prefer living in the United States than in the Philippines? Well, if you ask me my feelings are neutral. Based on what experienced last summer, staying in the US for a month was amazing. But working and living there is something I don't want to do for the rest of my life. Why is that so? First of all, building/renting a house is expensive there, and secondly being alone is what most Americans usually experience especially the aged because Americans are too busy finding a living that they don't have time to pay attention to any sort of concerns. Filipinos have mentality when it comes to quality & looks, and that mentality is "Anything American is good/better". Apparently, this mentality has dwindled our economy because the money that we are paying for imported products would go to the country producing them. After the colonization of the people from the West, Filipinos started patronizing anything foreign. Listening to foreign music, watching foreign movies, idolize foreign singers, actors & models, and dressing like the people from the West are some ways that we are now doing. Most of us Filipinos prefer to be entertained by foreign entertainment because we think that our local entertainments are bad in quality and are boring. Filipinos nowadays, especially young students, are less interested in our own language that's why we speak English instead. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong in speaking English, for it is the only language that most of us can understand. When we speak English it's an advantage for us because we can communicate to different people from different countries, for English is the Universal Language. However, replacing our own language with English means losing our identity.

I, as an Ateneo Hearter, can subdue Colonial Mentality through lessening the purchase of imported goods. Now that our culture is slowly vanishing due to our adaption of the American culture, we somehow can slowly regain our culture back through making an effort to speak our native language, buy local products, or be entertained by Filipino movies, songs etc. In these simple means, we can slowly bring our Filipino culture back.
